It’s finally here, the night you’ve been waiting for, for months. Your nerves haven’t let up in two days. Now in formal dress with your hair impeccably done and one last glance in the mirror, you hardly recognize yourself. When the invitation first arrived, it was hard to believe it was for you. After all, you have never been to a formal event; people like you don’t usually get invited.
Given the life you’ve lived, the things you have done, and the choices you’ve made, it would be humiliating if they knew who you really were.
You think to yourself, “If this invitation was meant for me, they must be unaware of my past. Glad nobody ran a background check or talked to my family!”
You? Who’d of thought?!
You park your car around the corner out of sight and walk the final mile. The last thing you’d want someone to see is what you drive. Surely the others will be arriving in limousines and expensive automobiles. One look at your car and it would be obvious your invitation was a case of mistaken identity. What’s more, you might be denied access or worse yet, asked to leave. How humiliating!
The closer you get to the palace, a massive and magnificent structure, the more nervous you get. Your heart races and you begin to perspire. What were you thinking? Why did you come and who do you think you are to attempt attending such an event? Now, only a block away, you see the red carpet which runs the length of the grand stairway skirting the palace’s elaborate entrance.
Feeling faint and immediately aware you are not ready; you entertain the thought of turning around. You’ve never seen a red carpet in real life, let alone walked on one. Wait! Maybe you’re not supposed to walk on it. What if it’s only for “certain” guests? How will you find out and who should you ask? Ever the more conscious not to draw attention to yourself or look foolish. You want to turn back. However, curiosity forces you to press on.
There must be a reason you’re supposed to attend this grand occasion, and it’s time to find out.
Rising to the occasion
As you approach the red carpet, a perfectly groomed butler wearing white gloves and a long, black tuxedo makes eye contact as he graciously nods and motions for you to step onto the carpet. You slowly climb the large staircase but remain nervous and self-conscious.
Tonight’s your night—it must be because you’re in and you can’t believe it! Almost frozen in your tracks, you stare in complete amazement at the lobby you just entered. Its beauty is beyond compare. Pillars rise from the floor to a ceiling several stories high. Brightly colored frescos, intricate tapestries, and large oil paintings cover the walls. Hand carved marble statues tower near each of the large doorways. The floor is a polished white marble, flawless in design and perfectly maintained.
In all its splendor–
There in front of you, just beyond the main entryway are a pair of large, hand carved mahogany doors. You slowly reach for one of the pulls and strain under the weight of the door. Next, you enter an elegant dining room; suddenly aware the environment is unlike anything you’ve experienced, ever. Its enormity and opulence are breathtaking.
A grand dining room table stretches out before you almost as far as you can see. The table handsomely decorated with beautiful silks and fine, brightly colored linens. Painstakingly prepared, the table is set with instruments of silver and gold. A feast awaits with every kind of meat, a wide variety of fruit, fine grains, vegetables, and tempting desserts.
Maybe you died and this is heaven? Perhaps it is a dream and you’re asleep?
Taken by the remarkable beauty and splendor of your surroundings, you hadn’t noticed something glaringly obvious. In a sudden burst of consciousness, you instantly realize you are alone!
From the time you stepped onto the red carpet outside until you entered the grand dining room, you have been all by yourself—not another person in sight.
The King of kings
As you stand in awe, your gaze drifts towards the end of the table. There sits a glorious and magnificent king; His eyes intently focused on you. But He’s not just any king; He is the King of kings, and His name is Jesus.
His robe shines so brightly He glows with a warm, translucent light that fills the room. With hair whiter than freshly fallen snow, His eyes like a flame of fire, yet His countenance not consumed. He exudes purity, power, warmth, compassion and peace.
Overwhelmed with emotion and short of breath, you’re unable to speak. Much of your strength has left your body, and your knees are weak. Uncertain whether to collect your strength and remain standing or fall to the floor and worship, you remain frozen, unable to move.
His gentle voice as the sound of many waters, echoes from the far end of the table, “Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last, I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold; I am alive forevermore.” His gazed fixed steadfastly upon you, He continues…
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; before you were born I set you apart, and from before the foundations of the world I chose you!” With that, He motions to the glorious feast prepared on the table set before you and speaks these words:
